URUMQI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior government official said Friday the situation in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was under control after local residents had taken to the streets over two days to protest against hypodermic syringe attacks.     There were no major protests in the city Friday, a day after massive protests that left five people dead Thursday, said Executive Deputy Mayor Zhang Hong. BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Drought-hit regions in northern China are forecast to have moderate to heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday, the National Meteorological Center said Tuesday.     The regions include Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region where more than 200,000 livestock have died due to drought, Heilongjiang Province where 1.47 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought, Liaoning and Jilin provinces.     A severe drought has hit China's northern part, affecting 11.33million hectares of crops, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     Among the total affected crops, 4.2 million hectares suffered serious drought and 1.07 million hectares dried up. BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China is to launch a two-year campaign to fight corruption and misconduct in the construction sector, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said Monday.     The move aimed to crack down on offences such as embezzlement, bribery and misconduct in the construction sector and improve the system to prevent offences.     Zhang Geng, SPP deputy procurator general, said the procuratorates nationwide had investigated 16,830 bribery cases in the sector from January 2006 to June 2009, accounting for 46 percent of all commercial bribery cases during that time.     The campaign will focus its efforts on offences such as corruption resulting in substandard construction and giving the green light to construction without a permit.
