CHENGDU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called the past 110 days since the May 12 quake "shocking and touching" when speaking to journalists in southwest China's quake-hit Sichuan Province on Tuesday.     "The past 110 days were days that shocked our minds, and also days that touched our hearts," said Wen. "It's not a long time, but what we did, as witnessed by people all over the world, will go down in history." No major epidemics were reported and industry and agriculture basically resumed.     The nation also demonstrated a kind of great spirit in the quake rescue and relief efforts and gained plenty of precious experiences in coping with emergencies, Wen said. "These will be more everlasting in the quake zone and in our hearts."     Citing soldiers rescuing life around the clock, volunteers taking care of survivors and local people helping each other, Wen expressed his appreciation for all the merits demonstrated on the rescuers and survivors.     Wen said the rebuilding of houses and infrastructures remained the most urgent and difficult task for relief work, citing that it took more than 100 days to fully repair the trunk road linking quake-hit Dujiangyan and Wenchuan and it required no less to keep it open as aftershocks continued to trouble the areas.     According to Wen, in October a nationwide campaign will be launched on donating clothes and quilts to the quake zone to help people there spend winter "safe and sound".     He vowed the central government would continue the relief work as best as it can along with local governments and residents.

XI'AN, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged local officials to help solve living difficulties for people who have suffered from a major earthquake.     Xi made the call during his inspection to northwestern Shaanxi Province, in which some counties were seriously affected by the deadly quake in neighboring Sichuan Province on May 12.     At Xujiaping village, Xi comforted villagers and encouraged them to resume production as early as possible. BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-three more survivors were pulled out of debris in Beichuan county in southwest China on Friday as rescue efforts entered the fourth day since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday.     The total number of survivors saved in Beichuan in Sichuan Province rose to 13,595, rescuers said.     Beichuan, a county of about 160,000 people, is one of the worst-hit region, with 80 percent of the buildings collapsed and at least 7,000 lives lost.     A 46-year-old survivor, Peng Zhijun, had lived on cigarettes, paper napkins and his urine when he was buried in the rubble in the past four days. He was still sober-minded almost 100 hours after the quake.     Doctors said he suffered bone fractures in the left arm and slight injuries in the legs, but the other parts of his body were basically in good condition.     "Natural disasters cannot be avoided. I had to save me from myself," Peng told reporters Friday evening. I only weigh 65 kilograms and they carried me by turns on their backs, walking miles to reach the medical station," said Deng.     The death toll in Sichuan alone exceeded 21,500 while 14,000 others remained buried as of 4 p.m. Friday, vice provincial governor Li Chengyun said at a press conference.     He said that 159,000 people were injured in the massive earthquake and 4.8 million people had been relocated.     Friday's death toll rose by about 2,000 from that of Thursday.     Sichuan had experienced 4,432 aftershocks in the past four days, Li said.     The national death toll from the earthquake rose to 22,069 as of 2 p.m. Friday, while 168,669 people were injured, the latest government statistics show.     In addition to the deaths in Sichuan, 364 were killed in Gansu Province, 109 in Shaanxi Province, 15 in Chongqing Municipality, two in Henan Province, one in Yunnan Province and one in Hubei Province.     The central government allocated another 1.17 billion yuan (167million U.S. dollars) to the relief fund for quake-hit areas on Friday. This brought the disaster relief fund from the central budget to 3.41 billion yuan.     Public donations in both cash and goods to the quake-hit areas rose to 3.175 billion yuan as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     China has mobilized more than 130,000 troops for rescue operations, who were desperate to excavate survivors despite the passing of the prime time for survivors' rescue -- 72 hours after the quake.     Foreign rescue teams from Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea and Singapore have arrived in Sichuan to aid the disaster relief efforts.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. BEIJING, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) under new chief Ma Jiantang is likely to reform its statistical system to ensure the authenticity and timeliness of data and help the government to better cope with the uncertainties of outside economic influences, the minutes of an NBS meeting show.     After his inauguration as the NBS director, Ma has said he felt pressure, but was confident of taking over "the baton of statistical reform and development."     "The changing world economy, especially the financial turmoil triggered by the U.S. sub-prime mortgage crisis, had increased the uncertainties of China's macro-economic development and stability and set new tasks for statisticians," said Ma.     "I would like to work with all NBS staff together to advance reforms and innovations in statistical systems, indices and methods to make sure statistical work could better serve the pursuit of scientific development to shift the target of economic expansion from quantity to quality, and building a moderately prosperous society."     According to the minute, Ma gave no details of his reform plans. But his predecessor, Xie Fuzhan, who was transferred to head the Research Office of the State Council, admitted in his leaving speech that the foundation for China's statistical work remained feeble, with a lot to be done in optimizing statistical methods and management.     "Both the status of statistical departments and the capability of statisticians needs to improve to meet their obligations and fulfill their tasks," Xie said. The NBS was only authorized to assist governors, municipal mayors and autonomous region chiefs in managing the heads of NBS branches.     Prestige-minded local officials looking for advancement have often tested the integrity of statisticians within their jurisdiction.     To remedy the situation, China's legislature revised the implementation rules of Statistics Law in 2006, which authorized NBS investigation teams to undertake independent statistical surveys and reports in all provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.     Under the Statistics Law, leading members of local authorities who alter statistical data without authorization, fabricate statistical data, compel or prompt statisticians to tamper with figures will be subject to administrative sanctions. Officials who retaliate against statisticians who refuse to fabricate data face criminal penalties.     After more than two decades of sizzling growth at the cost of depleted resources, increased energy consumption and environmental damage, the Chinese economy is undergoing a tough rebalancing that puts more emphasis on quality than quantity.     As global economic slowdown could dampen exports -- a major growth engine -- more than expected, the government has become increasingly careful with monetary tools like interest rates, deposit reserve ratios as well as industrial and fiscal policies so as not to plunge the expanding economy into recession.     Senior decision-makers have been demanding precise and more timely statistics for earlier warnings in the event of slowdown or other ailments.     Ma was appointed vice governor of Qinghai in December 2004 and used to work with the State Economic and Trade Commission and the Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.
