SHANGHAI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China would firmly stick to its moderately easy monetary policy and concrete the recovery momentum of the country's economy, said vice governor of China's central bank on Wednesday. Su Ning, Vice Governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC) made the remarks in a meeting held in the bank's Shanghai-based headquarter, saying a proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy were crucial for sustained growth.     Despite an initial economy recovery resulted from the government's stimulus efforts in the first half, the country still faced severe difficulties and challenges from both domestic and abroad.     In the second half, the PBOC would use a set of monetary policy mix to coordinate a "reasonable" credit structure based on market rules, and to ensure more loans to major infrastructure construction and technology innovation, Said Su.     China's economy rebounded to grow 7.9 percent in the second quarter driven by a surge of fixed-asset investment backed by government's 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package on last September.     Chinese banks lent a record 7.37 trillion yuan in the first half to shore up the economy, which sank to 6.1 percent in the first quarter.

BUCHAREST, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived here on Sunday to start his official visit to Romania after he concluded a visit to Hungary.     In a written statement upon his arrival at the airport, Xi said China and Romania have enjoyed long-term friendship, and they have enhanced political trust, cooperation in various areas, and coordination in dealing with international affairs since they forged diplomatic ties six decades ago.     Noting that the Chinese government values relations with Romania, Xi said his visit was to cement traditional friendship and reciprocal cooperation by taking the chance of 60th anniversary of bilateral ties. BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China vows to strengthen the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the run-up to the National Day celebrations, amid fears that the situation will worsen through autumn. According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. There have been no deaths from A/H1N1 in main land China.

MONROVIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has said his country is a responsible and faithful member of the United Nations and it respects the resolutions adopted by the world body.     In a weekend interview with Xinhua, Ambassador Zhou expressed his confidence that the Chinese peacekeepers serving within the United Nations Mission in Liberia would remain in the country up to 2011 when the Liberians would go to polls to elect a new president.     The ambassador said the Chinese peacekeepers here in Liberia are working under the leadership and guidance of the UN mission.     "As far as I know, the United Nations has decided that UNMIL (the United Nations Mission in Liberia) will stay in Liberia until 2011, and supporting Liberian general election is part of UNMIL mandate."     Ambassador Zhou said there could be a small reduction in the size of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in the country, but the troops would remain in Liberia to provide the needed support up to2011 under the UN Mission.     "As part of the UN Peacekeeping force, the Chinese peacekeepers will certainly play its role in supporting the next elections," he said.     The current Chinese peacekeepers are drawn up in three contingents namely medical, transportation and engineering. He said during the Liberian forthcoming elections, obviously the electoral authority will need transportation support which the Chinese unit can assist with.     Ambassador Zhou said although China does not have a combat troop in the mission, but he is confident that the three contingents can play a positive role in the peacekeeping efforts as well as in supporting the forthcoming elections.     "China has always supported the UN endeavors in maintaining peace and stability in Liberia and my view is that the peacekeeping operation in Liberia has so far been successful and we should allow it to stay so," he added.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have confiscated close to 53,000 guns by the end of August in a nationwide crackdown started in March this year, and 9,849 suspects involved in gun-related crimes were punished, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Thursday.     The ministry started the special crackdown on explosives and gun-related crimes in March, and said it would continue till China's Oct. 1 National Day celebration.     The crackdown is part of the ministry's campaign to maintain public stability, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Police also confiscated more than 2 million bullets and 120,000imitation guns, the ministry said.     About 12 percent of all guns confiscated were seized in the southern Hainan Province, while about 17 percent of the confiscated bullets came from the central Henan Province, the ministry said.     The southern province of Guangdong seized 34,690 imitation guns, which took up one fourth of the total.     Meanwhile, the MPS urged that efforts to crack down on gun-related crime must not be relaxed yet. Police forces should mobilize the public to report to the ministry if they have information about gun-related crimes, the ministry said on its website.     About 60 percent of the guns confiscated by the police were handed in by the public voluntarily, the ministry said.
