BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first seven companies applying for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), a Nasdaq-alike market in China, have got green lights from the country's securities regulator on Thursday.     They are in the fields of software, medical equipment and medicines. They planned to raise 2.27 billion yuan (332.65 million U.S. dollars), from the IPOs, according to China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).     "This means the seven enterprises are eligible to list on the market, but they still have some flaws in information issuance, which need to be improved," said Jiang Xinhong, a member of the review commission.     The flaws don't hinder the listings, but these enterprises should go through some necessary procedures before getting listed, said the CSRC.     The CSRC had received 155 applications for IPOs on the GEM as of Sept. 10, since it started to accept applications of the GEM on July 26.

XI'AN, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Serbian President Boris Tadic on Saturday arrived in the ancient capital Xi'an in northwest China, continuing his week-long visit to the country.     Tadic visited some well-known historic sites in the city, including Emperor Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum and the Terra-cotta Warriors.     The president hailed "Terra-cotta Warriors" as unique, saying those warriors demonstrated Chinese' delicate craftsmanship dating back more than 2000 years.     "They are so well-preserved, thus Serbia should work with China on the protection of cultural relics," Tadic said. HOHHOT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The key to social harmony and stability in China is to strengthen and improve the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Xi Jinping, Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said during a tour of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Xi said issues concerning economic development and social stability were top priority in the country's minority areas during his tour from Aug. 22 to 25.     He visited villages, customs posts, companies, communities and schools in Hulun Buir, Manzhouli, Baotou, Erdos, and Hohhot. BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Chinese steel mills would prefer to import more iron ore from Brazil rather than Australia after the detention of four Shanghai-based employees of multinational miner Rio Tinto on charges of commercial espionage, according to data specialist ASXMarine. Spot iron ore vessel bookings from Brazil to China surged to a record 39 in July, from 24 in the previous month, Reuters quoted the data from ASXMarine.     Vessel bookings from Australia's main iron ore ports to China dropped to 31, down from 40 compared to the previous month and the lowest reading since February after the Rio Tinto scandal. But the exact figures would be available only in September as shipments from Brazil and Australia would be delayed by one or two months.     China's main ports received 56.5 million tons of iron ore in July, up 35 percent from the same period last year, the Ministry of Transport said yesterday.     Iron ore imports rose 29.3 percent year on year, to 297 million tons, in the first half of this year, while traders imported 131 million tons, up 90.4 percent from last year.     The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said last Friday that excess iron ore imports had distorted the demand-supply situation and hampered its position at negotiations with global miners on new long-term benchmark prices.     It also said foreign iron ore suppliers promoted massive selling on the cash market, leading to huge stockpiles and urged to limit import licenses.     However, the iron ore import figures in July reflected orders in May as it takes more than a month to deliver ore from Australia and Brazil, said Zang from Rizhao port.     Chinese steel mills started to reduce orders ever since CISA rejected the 33-percent cut offered by miners in May and held out for more discount, he said.     China News Service reported yesterday that CISA halted talks because iron ore spot prices have been "seriously distorted", citing a statement issued by the association.     However, no such statement could be found on the association's website, and its official surnamed Wang said the report was not true and talks were ongoing.

On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Internet researchers from China and Britain agreed at a forum in Beijing Thursday to enhance cooperation on maintaining a safe Internet environment for children.     The second China-U.K. Internet Roundtable-conference was held from Wednesday to Thursday.     The participants of the conference believed that the two governments and Internet enterprises from the two countries should work together to deal with the challenges brought about by online dangers to children.     They agreed it was necessary to strengthen the protection of young netizens from unhealthy information online, such as pornographic material or exposure to online predators.     Malcolm Hutty, head of public affairs of London Internet Exchange Ltd. said that there should be a "partnership approach" between government, parents and children's organizations responsible for advancing the rights for children.     Hutty said the government should create new protective laws.     "There is a big role for Internet industry ... in raising the awareness and providing ... educational messages about how to protect children," Hutty said, adding that there were responsibilities around ensuring that services aimed at children were made safe for them, particularly in chatrooms and social networking.     Susan Daley of Symantec suggested teaching children good cyber-skills in schools.     Hu Qiheng, chairwoman of the Internet Society of China (ISC), said that it was the responsibility of the government, parents and schools to safeguard the rights of young netizens.     Internet enterprises should also provide technological support to parents in installing protective software, she said.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, by the end of 2008, about 108 million Chinese Internet users were under 19 years old.

MOSCOW, July 24 (Xinhua) -- A senior delegation led by Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng met with Russian officials on Friday and Saturday over the sudden closure of a market in Moscow.     On June 29, some 150 Chinese merchants and a large quantity of their goods were seized in a crackdown on smuggling at the Cherkizovsky Market, Moscow's biggest wholesale market.     The market was subsequently closed, causing heavy economic loss to the Chinese merchants who operate businesses there. No word has been given as to when the market will reopen.     Gao stressed the China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation during his consultations with Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Migration Service, Yuri Buriak, Deputy Economic Development Minister, Andrei Slepnyov, and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Borodavkin.     Gao also spoke of the recent state visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Russia, the upcoming regular China-Russia Prime Minister's meeting in Beijing in October, and celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.     He said under such circumstances, China and Russia should try to maintain their friendship and mutual trust, and properly handle problems arising from the development of bilateral ties.     Non-governmental trade between China and Russia has its complicated historical origins, Gao said, and the remarkable contributions of Chinese merchants to the economic prosperity of Russia, especially during difficult times, should be taken into consideration.     He said against the backdrop of the current global financial and economic crisis in particular, to deal with the abrupt shutdown of the Cherkizovsky market appropriately and scrupulously would be mutually beneficial to China and Russia.     China has no objections to Russia's crackdown on smuggling, he said, but Moscow should effectively protect the property and dignity of Chinese businessmen.     Russian officials from relevant ministries and departments all agreed that the market shutdown would not affect the long-time friendship between the two countries.     They also emphasized that the shutdown was aimed at smuggling and not against the Chinese merchants, who make up less than 40 percent of all the merchants there.     The Russian side also urged the Chinese merchants to comply with laws, and said the Moscow municipal government had started to help merchants move their goods.     Slepnyov said a collective work plan against "grey customs clearances" will soon be studied.     Gao, who arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, was accompanied by a delegation comprising of officials from the ministries of commerce and foreign affairs, the General Administration of Customs, and trade officials from Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.     The delegation has also held negotiations with the Investigation Committee of the Prosecutor General's Office, the Federal Customs Service and the Moscow municipal government.

URUMQI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A key expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region began construction on Wednesday in a move to improve the region's road network and serve its economic development.     The 135-km expressway will link Kuytun City to Karamay City. The project, funded by the central government and Xinjiang regional government, will cost 3.87 billion yuan (about 567 million U.S. dollars).     The road is bidirectional with four lanes. It will be completed and put into use in November 2011.     Dai Gongxing, vice chairman of the Xinjiang regional government, said at the groundbreaking ceremony in Kuytun that the expressway, also part of the national expressway network, would improve the regional transport and promote local economic development.
