He said China supports the integration process of the European Union, adding that the EU should play an active role in regional and international affairs.     Wu said China places great importance on developing relations with the EU. He expressed the wish to deepen practical cooperation in all fields and expand trade and investment. He said the two sides should carry out dialogues and communication on major issues on the basis of mutual respect of sovereignty and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.     Napolitano said as an important member of the EU, Italy is ready to play a constructive role in the regional bloc and help push for a healthy, stable development of EU-China relations.     Napolitano said China's development will not only benefit the Chinese people, but also contribute to peace and development of the world.     Wu said that China is still a developing country, with its per capita GDP ranking below 100th place in the world. He said China will continue to focus on development by working on economic restructuring and industry upgrading. China has adopted composite measures to address both current difficulties and long-term need so as to achieve all-round, balanced and sustainable development.     Wu is on an official goodwill visit to Italy.

HELSINKI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland on Thursday agreed to push for closer economic cooperation to tackle the ongoing global financial crisis.     Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang unveiled broad measures to work together with Finland to fight the global financial crisis after meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. Li and Vanhanen joined a signing ceremony of several government and business agreements between the two sides, under which Li said China would purchase Finland's advanced environment-friendly technologies.     China would also send a large group of entrepreneurs to Finland within two weeks to make major purchases of Finnish goods, according to Li. BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The China Ping An Insurance (Group), which had plans to buy a 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) stake in Shenzhen Development Bank (SDB), said Sunday that there are no changes in buying into the bank for the moment.     There are no changes in the bank, and the stake purchase aims to improve Ping An's financial service and asset structure, said Zhang Zixin, general manager of the China's second largest insurer via a telephone news conference.     Ping An and SDB will operate with their own plans. The management team of the bank will not change right now, according to the Frank Newman, president of SDB, and Richard Jackson, president of the Ping An Bank Co., Ltd.     The company said last Friday it would buy 520 million shares from the U.S.-based TPG's Asian arm Newbridge Capital for 11.45 billion yuan by the end of 2010. Newbridge Capital is currently the top shareholder in Shenzhen Development Bank.     The Ping An would acquire no more than a 30 percent stake in Shenzhen Development Bank after the two deals, and become the top shareholder instead.     The Ping An Group, together with Ping An Life Insurance, currently holds a 4.68 percent stake in Shenzhen Development Bank.

WASHINGTON, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming has called for stronger economic ties between China and the United States.     "Economic links have always been an important basis for the China-U.S. relationship, and the growth in trade between the two countries has been robust since the establishment of normal diplomatic relations," Chen wrote in an article published in The Wall Street Journal on Monday.     Currently, China and the U.S. are each other's second-largest trading partner with the volume of the two-way trade in goods exceeding 300 billion U.S. dollars.     But the commercial ties between the two nations have been affected by the global financial crisis.     Chinese statistics show bilateral trade dropped 6.8 percent, and U.S. investment in China slumped 19.4 percent, on a year-on-year basis in the fourth quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year, Chen wrote.     He was scheduled to meet with his U.S. counterpart on Monday to discuss bilateral trade and investment measures.     "History tells us that the more serious a crisis becomes, the more committed we must be to openness and cooperation," Chen wrote. "Regrettably, however, trade measures by the U.S. against China are on the rise."     Recently, American industries have petitioned the U.S. government for antidumping investigations, and for investigations under the World Trade Organization's "special safeguard provision," which could restrict imports of Chinese products, he said.     "This will seriously test China-U.S. economic and trade relations," he added.     The Chinese commerce minister noted that the need to foster positive Sino-U.S. ties has never been greater.     He also called on both sides to step up cooperation in trade and investment issues, and explore and establish new possibilities for cooperation in such areas as agriculture, new and high technology, finance, energy and the environment.     "Dialogue and communication also need to be intensified concerning multilateral and regional trade and economic affairs," he said.     To that end, Chen put forth four proposals:     -- To seize the opportunity for cooperation, and work together to tackle the crisis;     -- To mutually open markets to expand trade and investment;     -- To strengthen bilateral dialogue and resolve differences properly;     -- To safeguard the environment for trade and advance the Doha Round.     Chen also said now it's no time for protectionism.     The U.S. and China, as the largest and the third-largest trading countries in the world respectively, should take the lead in following up the consensus reached at the G20 Summit in London and refrain from formulating any new trade protection policies before the end of 2010, he wrote.     "A positive, cooperative and comprehensive Sino-American relationship will surely bring new prosperity and development to both economies," he added.     In his article, he also expressed hope and confidence that bilateral trade would rise to a new high and exceed 500 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years, growing in a more balanced way.

In fact, I believe the target will definitely be met," said Xulin, head of the Department of Fiscal and Financial Affairs of the National Development and Reform Commission.     Speaking at a briefing in Hong Kong, Xu said the basic assessment was that there has been consolidation in the recovery momentum and that the minor slowdown in April, normal as it has been when considering the past experiences, did not necessarily signal a second bottom in the ongoing economic downturn.     Economic planners have been monitoring the economy closely and are prepared to put in place additional measures in the coming months if it is necessary, Xu said.     Post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan province was being carried out quicker than previously planned. "Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Italy will reinforce this strategic collaboration," he said.     Hu will attend a meeting between the leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) and emerging economies from July 8 to 10 in L'Aquila.     Before the G8 summit, he will pay a state visit to Italy from July 5 to 8 at the invitation of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. After the G8 meeting, the Chinese leader will visit Portugal from July 10 to 11.     China-Italy ties have maintained a sound momentum of rapid development, especially since 2004, when the two countries forged the first all-round strategic partnership to boost political and economic cooperation, La Bella said.     "The Italian Culture Year in China of 2006 was very successful," La Bella said. JINAN, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen people were confirmed dead and two others fatally injured in a fireworks explosion Saturday afternoon in east China's Shandong Province. The explosion took place at an unlicensed fireworks processing factory in Yangzhuangzi Village of Qingyun Township, Qingyun County, at 1:30 p.m. Three rooms owned by villager Yang Ziye were toppled, according to the Qingyun county government.
