BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday that the role of the United Nations should be bolstered in handling the global economic downturn, achieving sustainable development, and safeguarding world peace and security. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing nation, China has always observed the principles of the UN Charter, supported the UN's efforts to improve security, development and human rights and its reform to increase efficiency, Hu said to visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon Hu.     "China will continue to join in the UN undertakings and carry out its duties with responsive and constructive attitude, and will work with the international community to build a harmonious world," Hu said. BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy would continue to recover from the world financial crisis in the latter half and expand at the rate of 8.5 percent for the whole year, said a report from the Bank of Communications on Sunday.     The country's economic development was expected to accelerate the pace and expand at 9 percent in the third quarter and 9.8 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the report.     The report indicated that the country would achieve the set goal of 8 percent economic growth for the full year，contributed by a robust domestic investment and consumption.     In the latter half, investment would represent fast increase, boosted by development from infrastructure construction, real estate, and the industrial sector, said the report.     China saw its economy growth slowed down amid the world financial crisis. Its gross domestic product grew 7.9 percent in the second quarter after sinking to 6.1 percent in the first three months.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. RIGA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Parliament Speaker Gundars Daudze here on Tuesday.     In his meeting with Zatlers, Hui said the China-Latvia relations have been developing smoothly in recent years. The two sides have maintained high-level contacts and strengthened mutual political trust. There has also been remarkable progress in economic and trade cooperation and people-to-people contacts.     President Zatlers visited China last year and reached important consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the development of bilateral relations, said Hui.     The current visit is aimed at implementing the consensus reached last year, deepening friendship and promoting cooperation, he said.     The two sides should work together in face of the current global financial crisis, and should also look even farther and further promote cooperation, he said. They agreed on establishing a strategic partnership of cooperation in May 2008, opening up a new era in bilateral ties. They met again on the sidelines of the financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in London in April this year.     China and South Korea are both important neighbors and cooperative partners. Now China is the top trade partner, export market and source of imports of South Korea.     Hu is in New York for the UN climate change summit, the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly and a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.     After the UN meetings, President Hu will fly to Pittsburgh to attend the G20 financial summit.
