WASHINGTON, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The efforts by U.S. legislators to pressure China to reform its currency is to make China a scapegoat of the U.S. domestic politics, and may actually hurt the U.S. economy, according to articles published by U.S. well known media in recent two days.The Wall Street Journal said Thursday that U.S. lawmakers "want to make the yuan a scapegoat and risk a trade war with China," referring to the U.S. Senators' bill proposed Tuesday to call for China to appreciate its currency yuan.Under the pressure of the election year and high unemployment, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and four other senators unveiled a legislation to threaten China for punitive duties on goods from China if it does not let yuan appreciate against the U.S. dollar.The China-made clothes are sold at a Marshalls store in New York, the United States, March 18, 2010. BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Russia would strengthen coordination to better implement the regional cooperation program approved by state leaders last year, officials from the two countries said here on Sunday.The statement was made by Zhang Guobao, head of the National Energy Administration and vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, and representatives of the Russian government, at the China-Russian regional cooperation symposium.In September 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev approved the cooperation program between northeast China and Russia's far east and east Siberian region.Zhang said the cooperation program, covering many fields, included more than 300 key projects in local cooperation and infrastructure construction and transformation.The symposium is the first bilateral meeting aimed at promoting China-Russian regional cooperation since the approval of the cooperation program.

BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- China is making plans to upgrade its food safety system, stressing improved quality standards and strengthened supervision, according to a notice made public Monday at www.gov.cn.In late February, south China's Hainan Province took emergency measures to stop toxic cow peas from entering the market after about 3.5 tonnes of Hainan cow peas found were tainted with a poisonous pesticide.To prevent such incidents and help ensure food safety, the country plans to increase the frequency of food tests and inspections -- especially for dairy products and other high-risk food.National quality standards for diary products will also be released this year.At least six infants died and almost 300,000 became ill across the country after consuming dairy products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. The scandal was first reported in September 2008 and prompted a food safety overhaul nationwide.

BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China's year-on-year inflation rate was expected to be between 2 to 2.5 percent for the first quarter this year, the country's top economic planner said here Tuesday.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, would see a "moderate increase" in the first quarter, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement on its website.China's CPI rose 2.7 percent from a year earlier in February, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.Food prices would begin to fall as the weather got warmer, said the statement. In February, food prices rose 6.2 percent from the previous year due to the Lunar New Year holiday and poor weather.The Lunar New Year holiday, or Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival in China for family reunion. BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign-funded enterprises in China exported 494.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products in 2009.A document posted on the website of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said the figure made up 69.3 percent of the country's total exports of such products in the past year.Exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products by privately-owned enterprises totalled 106.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, down 8.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the document.State-owned enterprises only exported 92.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products, accounting for 12.9 percent of the country's total machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.The GAC document also said the majority of the country's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products fell into the category of processing and assembling trade.China's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products in the category of processing and assembling trade totalled 466.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, making up 65.4 percent of the country's total exports of such products.The country exported 713.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year, down 13.4 percent year-on-year. The exports contributed 59.3 percent to China's total exports in 2009.The European Union (EU), the United States of America and Hong Kong were the three major destinations for the China mainland's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.China exported 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars worth of products last year, down 16 percent from 2008, replacing Germany as the world's largest exporter.
