UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait.

CAIRO, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Thursday that China is willing to further the strategic cooperative ties with Egypt which was established in 1999.     During his meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Li said the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the ties in next year should be an opportunity to further such a relationship.     "The two sides should take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen the strategic coordination and cooperation and enrich the contents of bilateral relations," he said.     Li suggested the two countries to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, transport, communications, tourism and human resources as well as explore new areas.     Meanwhile, Mubarak expressed beliefs that with the joint efforts of leaders of the two countries, Egypt-China strategic cooperative relations will make new progress.     Li arrived here on Wednesday afternoon for a four-day official visit to Egypt at the invitation of Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef.     He told Mubarak that the purpose of his visit is to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, deepen the relations with Egyptian and promote relations with Arab and African countries.     He hailed Egypt, which he believes plays an important role in international and regional affairs, as an important cooperative partner of China among developing countries.     "The Chinese side attaches great importance to developing Sino-Egyptian relations," Li noted, adding that the two countries have always respected each other, treated each other frankly and witnessed continuously deepened political trust and rapid development of pragmatic cooperation in various areas.     "The relationship between the two nations has become a model for cooperation among developing countries," he said.     Mubarak asked Li to convey his regards to Chinese President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders. He said he has maintained close and friendly relations with several generations of Chinese leaders, and Egypt is pleased to see China's rapid development, and hopes it can be stronger.     He said he has been working to promote the development of bilateral ties, and attaches great importance to developing friendly cooperation in all fields with China.     Li also briefed Mubarak on China's measures in countering the global financial crisis, including adjusting macroeconomic policies in a timely manner, implementing proactive fiscal policy and moderate monetary policy and expanding domestic demand to promote economic growth.     He said China believes that these measures will be conducive to China's economy to maintain steady and rapid development.     After the meeting, Li briefed the Egyptian media on the meeting with the president.     Li also held talks with Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef, and the two attended a signing ceremony on cooperative documents in fishery.     Besides meetings with Egyptian leaders, Li will also attend the opening ceremony of a China-Egyptian business forum in the afternoon.     Egypt is the second leg of Li's first overseas trip since he took office as vice premier in March. The trip has brought him to Indonesia and will bring him to Kuwait.     Among his entourages are senior foreign affairs, development, commercial and banking officials.     According to Chinese statistics, trade volume between China and Egypt has reached more than 5.3 billion U.S. dollars as of October this year, a 44-percent increase compared with the same period of last year.     By the end of July, about 570 Chinese companies have invested in the northeastern African country.     In addition, more and more Egyptian students begin to study Chinese language as the bilateral ties ushered into a new phase. Up to now, there are five Egyptian universities that have established Chinese language departments.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Ministry has demanded that the U.S. Embassy to China facilitate travel for the families of those killed and injured in Friday's tour bus crash near the Hoover Dam in Arizona. In a statement released Sunday, the ministry confirmed that six Chinese nationals died and nine were injured, including one from Hong Kong.     The Chinese Embassy in the United States and Consulate General in Los Angeles immediately dispatched a team assist U.S. authorities with treating the injured and investigating the accident. BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or the Cabinet, said on Wednesday that more efforts would be made to encourage enterprises to upgrade technology and engage in independent innovation.     It also said there would be policies to promote merger and acquisition among enterprises.     The policies were clinched at an executive meeting of the State Council, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao. The meeting was held to discuss measures to address difficulties faced by enterprises and promote economic growth and deliberate plans to reform finished oil pricing mechanism and fuel taxes and fees.     According to the meeting, plans would be drawn up to help some key industries, including steel, auto, ship manufacturing, petrochemical, light industry, textile, nonferrous metals, equipment manufacturing and information technology.     The meeting urged banks to increase credit supply to help small and medium enterprises overcome difficulties.     To offset adverse global economic conditions, the State Council on Nov. 9 has announced a 4 trillion yuan (585.7 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package to boost domestic demand. This will be combined with other boosting measures, such as loosening credit conditions and cutting taxes.     The huge amount of money will be spent over the next two years to finance programs in 10 major areas, such as low-income housing, rural infrastructure, water, electricity, transportation, the environment, technological innovation and rebuilding after several disasters, most notably the May 12 earthquake.     The State Council also discussed the reform plans of finished oil pricing mechanism and fuel tax and fees at the meeting. It decided to make public the two draft reform plans to solicit public advice.     According to the National Development and Reform Commission, the government has been studying a fuel tax to replace the current road tolls imposed upon vehicles.     The long-awaited fuel tax and fee reform was first proposed in 1994.     The State Council meeting also reached decisions to increase the storage of key materials and resources, accelerate development of the service industry and enhance measures to promote employment and social security.     More education and job training would be provided among the government's efforts to increase employment. This education and training should also cover the lay-off workers and rural laborers who returned from cities because of unemployment, according to the meeting.

RAMALLAH, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese special envoy for the Middle East Sun Bigan called for an immediate halt of military activities in Gaza during his meeting with Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah Thursday.     The two discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip, which has been under intensive Israeli attacks for almost three weeks, causing more than 1,000 Palestinians dead and over 4,600 wounded. A stable channel for supply of humanitarian aid including food, medicine and fuel, for Gaza should be open at the earliest time possible, and parties concerned should provide necessary guarantee in this regard.     3. Parties concerned should establish, through negotiation, a ceasefire monitoring mechanism in Gaza and work to create durable security and stability there.     4. The Palestine-Israel peace talks should resume at the earliest time, and efforts should be made to seek solution to issues related to the final status of Palestine on the basis of mutual-trust, so that an independent Palestinian state will be established as early as possible and the "two states" of Palestine and Israel will coexist peacefully.     5. The international community should increase mediating efforts for peace and promote a comprehensive, just and durable settlement of the Middle East issue. CHENGDU, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao visited quake-hit Sichuan Province over the weekend, showing concern for survivors and inspecting reconstruction work as winter set in.     It was Hu's second visit after the May 12 earthquake. Hu's last visit was on May 16, when quake relief work was in a critical phase.     The 8.0-magnitude quake, centered in Wenchuan County, left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless.     BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, heard here on Wednesday a series of reports including the implementation of the 11th five-year plan and the impact of the world financial crisis.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, attended the conference.     Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), delivered a report on how the Chinese government has implemented the Outline of the 11th Five-Year Program for National Economic and Social Development (2006-2010). The Second plenary session of the sixth session of the 11th Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress is held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Dec. 24, 2008.    The implementation has been going well, with most of the goals being reached as scheduled at the middle stage, he said.     He urged more attention to be paid on expanding domestic demand, increasing innovative ability, continuing reforms on resource prices and taxes, energy saving and emission reduction, as well as increasing the government's ability to provide public services.     Zhang also gave a report on how the intensifying impact of the world financial and economic crisis is reverberating through China's economy.     Other reports included efforts to stabilize prices and prevent price hikes addressed by NDRC vice head Zhang Mao, as well as water pollution prevention and control by Environmental Protection Minister Zhou Shengxian.
