TAIPEI, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland's 20 million yuan of donations to ethnic minorities in the typhoon-hit Taiwan have been "all given out", Kao Chin Su-mei, a representative of the ethnic minorities, said here Sunday.     Earlier in August, the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee announced it has raised 20 million yuan (about 95.4 million new Taiwan dollars) for the ethnic minorities in Taiwan after Typhoon Morakot hit the island.     The donation plan was announced when a delegation headed by Kao Chin Su-mei visited Beijing on August 19.     The donation has been distributed to more than 2,153 homeless ethnic minority families (30,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), more than 3,300 primary and junior high school ethnic minority students in hardest-hit areas (5,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), and nearly 14,00 senior high school and junior college ethnic minority students (10,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), according to Gao Chin Su-mei.     All the donation had been distributed to ethnic minority victims of the typhoon, she said.     Currently, about 500,000 people of ethnic minorities live in Taiwan, 80 percent of whom make a living by growing and processing agricultural products.

BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter Scale hit a border area between northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Saturday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.     The epicenter was at 38.2 degrees north latitude and 106.6 degrees east longitude.     Xinhua reporters in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia, said tremor was felt in the downtown area.     No casualties have been reported.

FUKUOKA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday his visit to Japan had "a positive result" and "achieved what he had expected."     Xi made the remarks before leaving the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, the last stop of his Japan visit, for South Korea to continue his four-country Asia tour.     During a meeting with Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso, Xi said he held fruitful talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo and exchanged views with representatives of all Japanese circles. BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China should keep home prices from long time "abnormal increases" and divert profits made from home price hikes to the public through taxation, a senior property official said here Friday.     Dong Zuoji, director of land planning department of the Ministry of Land and Resources, said home prices would continue to rise as the land in the world's fastest-growing economy is becoming increasingly scarce, but the government should use taxes to give the added value of the land back to society.     "China hasn't seen overcapacity in real estate sector on the whole, otherwise home prices wouldn't have gained so much," he said while attending a meeting held in Beijing.     Dong said the government would increase land supply for subsidized homes and adopt measures to prevent developers from hoarding land.     The government would also guarantee land use for high-tech, high added-value enterprises while limiting that of backward production projects.     Due to a series of supportive measures adopted by the government, China's property sector rebounded strongly this year. Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities rose for the eight straight month in October.     Average house price in Beijing surged 43.7 percent in July from that of January, to 14,500 yuan per square meter, Golden Keys, a property agent said on July 17.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Thursday that Japan's move to build facilities on the Okinotori atoll will not change its legal status, as Japan is seeking vast economic interests at the nearby southern Pacific.     According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLS), and based on the natural and geographic situation of the Okinotori atoll, neither exclusive economic zones nor continental shelves should be claimed on it, Spokesperson Jiang Yutold a regular press briefing.     Japan has asked the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to recognize the extended area around the so-called "Okinotori island," 1,740 km south of Tokyo, as its continental shelf, which would enable it to claim a vast surrounding area as an exclusive economic zone.     According to Article 121 of the UNCLS, rocks that cannot sustain human habitation or an economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.     According to Japanese media report, the Japanese government plans to build a port and conduct mineral explorations on the atoll in 2010.     "Building facilities on it would not change the atoll's legal status," Jiang said.     Such a bid did not conform to the international laws of the sea and was against the interests of the international community, she said.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Tuesday voiced support for the peace and stability in South Asia.     "The two sides welcomed all efforts conducive to peace, stability and development in South Asia," said a joint statement issued after a meeting here between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     They support the efforts of Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight terrorism, maintain domestic stability and achieve sustainable economic and social development, said the statement.     They also pledged support for the improvement and growth of relations between India and Pakistan.     The two sides are ready to strengthen communication, dialogue and cooperation on issues related to South Asia and work together to promote peace, stability and development in that region, according to the statement.
