BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.     The oil giant had 1.67 million staff last year, which meant more than 80,000 of them would be laid-off within three years, Beijing News reported.     The move followed CNPC's earlier announcement to cut non-production spending by 10 percent from a year earlier, the paper said. The China National Petroleum Corp. MOSCOW, July 30 (Xinhua) -- As the special guests of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, 50 students from China's quake-hit Sichuan province Wednesday visited the glittering Andrew Hall of the Kremlin, and had a joyous time with the Russian president.     "I hope that you will make friends with more Russian children during your rehabilitation in our country," Medvedev said in his speech, describing the students as "little heroes" in the relief work following the devastating earthquake.     These middle and primary school students, who were recuperating in a rehabilitation center in southwest Russia's coastal city of Tuapse before coming to Moscow, are the representatives of some 1,000 children who would arrive in Russia for further recovery in 2008. CHENGDU, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday the efforts to search survivors were continuing in the quake-hit areas, but the focus of work would be gradually shifted to the resettlement of residents and post-quake reconstruction.     Wen told Chinese and foreign reporters at a resettlement site in Yingxiu town, a worst-hit area in the May 12 quake, that the biggest difficulty in resettling the quake-affected residents was the lack of tents.     A total of 15 million rooms were damaged or destroyed in the quake and a large number of people are in need of shelter, said the premier, who is paying a second visit to the quake-hit Sichuan Province.     "We have collected the tents nationwide and got aid from international community, but tents are still lacking," Wen said.     The Chinese government has ordered domestic tent manufacturers to produce and transport 30,000 tents to the quake zone each day and 900,000 within a month, Wen said.     The production of movable plank houses should also be accelerated to ensure the quake-affected people resume a normal life within three months, Wen added.     Efforts should also be made to ensure no big epidemic after the disaster, the premier said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R Front) speaks during an interview with journalists from at home and abroad, in Yingxiu Town of Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, May 24, 2008, during his second inspection tour of quake-hit areas in Sichuan after May 12 when the 8.0-magnitude quake happened.     Enough epidemic prevention staff and medicine supply should be ensured, he said.     Wen said another problem confronting quake-relief workers is that the chances of secondary disasters still exist. "The search and rescue operation has been conducted in every village."     The central finance had earmarked tens of billions of yuan for the relief work, Wen said. A 75-billion-yuan (about 10.7 billion U.S. dollars) post-quake reconstruction fund had been set up and more money would be added to it in the next two years, he added.     Before the reporters, Wen expressed sincere thanks to the Chinese worldwide, including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as the leaders, governments and people of other countries for their concern, sympathy, aid and help.     "Facing such a powerful quake, we welcome international reporters to the quake zone," Wen said. BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese companies will no longer need the central bank's approval when issuing short-term bonds on the inter-bank market amidst government efforts to boost direct financing and reduce bank loan risks.     The People's Bank of China (PBOC) announced non-financial companies could issue bonds with maturities of less than one year on the inter-bank market without its approval from April 15.     Instead, they would only need to register at the National Association of Financial Market Institutional Investors set up in September, the PBOC said in a statement issued late on Saturday.     It said other negotiable notes "with a certain maturity" issued by non-financial companies on the inter-bank bond market wouldn't need administrative examination and approval, either. Nor would future innovative financing tools on the market.     China has vowed to develop its capital market and broaden direct financing channels to curb enterprises' heavy reliance on bank credit.     "China's financial structure has long been unbalanced, with its direct financing underdeveloped," said the statement. "Enterprises rely on bank loans too much, bringing them fairly large hidden risks."     To boost innovation in debt offering and raise the share of direct financing could mobilize the transfer of deposits to investment and decrease credit risks of the banking system, it said.     China allowed companies to offer short-term bonds to qualified institutional investors on the inter-bank market in May 2005.     From then to the end of 2007, 316 companies issued 769.3 billion yuan (about 109.9 billion U.S. dollars) of short-term bonds, with 320.3 billion yuan of outstanding debts, statistics showed.     In comparison, short-term loans to non-financial companies and other institutions surged 1.25 trillion yuan in 2007, while middle- and long-term loans jumped 1.65 trillion yuan.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is.     After the Sanlu formula's problem exposure, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a nationwide examination of baby milk powder to find 22 companies whose formulas were tainted.
